This week’s ZombieZine has something we didn’t manage to fit in last week: actual zombies…well, in a comic. It’s been a pretty busy week for news too, with the Academy Award nominees, the launch of this year’s JDIFF and even some new gaming hardware (second week in a row…this is becoming a habit!)

The King’s Speech & True Grit Lead Nominees For The 83rd Academy Awards

There were no real surprises when the nominations for the 83rd Academy Awards (or Oscars, to you and me) were announced on Tuesday. The King’s Speech is top of the class with 12 nods (including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Supporting Actor and Best Supporting Actress and Best Original Screenplay.) Next on the list is True Grit with ten nominations, and Inception and The Social Network both have eight each.

Also getting some significant love are Jennifer Lawrence for Winter’s Bone (she’ll soon be seen as Mystique in X-Men: First Class), Danny Boyle’s 127 Hours (along with lead James Franco), The Kids Are All Right (alongside a Best Supporting Actor nomination for upcoming Avengers actor Mark Ruffalo) and Toy Story 3 (which has been nominated for both Best Animated Feature and Best Picture.) The awards ceremony will be held on February 27th, with the aforementioned James Franco and the Selina-Kyle-shaped Anne Hathaway hosting.

Sony Announces New Handheld Console

There have been rumours about a successor to the Sony PSP range for at least a year, if not longer. Now, Sony have quashed those rumours…but still announced a new handheld console. In fact, it’s a Next Generation Portable, or code-named to be the NGP.

So yes, all those other reports you’ve been reading on sites that there was a PSP2…well, they’re wrong, because Sony have made every effort to inform us that this is a totally new product (however it might look.) The specs include a multi-touch screen at the front (and an interesting multi-touch pad on the rear), front and rear cameras, six-axis motion sensing, built-in 3G and bluetooth, and the usual smattering of buttons and analogue sticks.

The games and console memory will be on small flash-based cards that Sony hope will provide an ever-expanding memory system as required, along with a new product called Near, which will pick up on nearby players and friends. The NGP is expected to launch before the end of 2011.

On top of all this, Sony had another big announcement: the PlayStation Suite coming to Android phones and tablets, which will allow users to access PlayStation classics on their Android device.

Zombies Are Taking Over My Comics

If there’s one thing that’s cool about the internet, it’s discovering new stuff: when that stuff just happens to be a webcomic about a zombie apocalypse…well, that’s cool, isn’t it?

Zomblicity is a new web-comic written by Robin Sandiford with art by Farcreazy Fahad which is currently on the second issue of its first volume (which is expected to run to a total of nine issues.) Zombie comics come and go, but Zomblicity promises something a little bit different: what if there were two worlds, one in which lead character Curtis Madsen were attacked by a zombie on his way into work…and one where he wakes up 33 minutes later! Robin has described the series as

a ‘Sliding Doors’ with Zombies if you like (although it’s much more than that..I promise)…and [issue 3] will be much more action/gore based fun…This is where the fun really starts!!!

The first two issues are already available online at Zomblicity.co.uk, so go and check it out and give these guys some support!

Jameson Dublin Internation Film Festival 2011

Every year, the JDIFF brings some pretty amazing films and events to Dublin, and with this year’s festival taking place February 17th -27th, Dublin will once again be wrapped up in the glitz, glamour and bright lights of Hollywood. While the films always take pride of place, we can’t help but notice some of the big names who’ll be around with films this year, including Martin Sheen, Emilio Estevez, Richard Ayoade and Harry Shearer, to name but a few.

We’re especially interested by some of the horror offerings at this year’s JDIFF including Spanish horror Julia’s Eyes, vampire chiller Stake Town and a special “interactive” screening of William Castle’s The Tingler starring Vincent Price. More details can be found at the official JDIFF site, where tickets are on sale now.

Duke Nukem Forever…And Ever…And Ever

We’ll believe this one when we see it in stores, but Duke Nukem Forever finally has a release date of May 2011.

Supposedly.

Fantastically Four No More

We’re not going to spoil things like some other sites by telling you exactly what happened in this week’s Fantastic Four #587, but it culminated in the death of one of superhero-dom’s first family. The story has had a long lead-up since current writer Jonathan Hickman started his run with issue 570, and if we’re to believe the various interviews, it’s a death that won’t be reversed any time soon.

However, some of the real story is derived not from who died in the issue, but the fact that the comic went on sale on Tuesday (rather than the traditional date of Wednesday) which led to various news sources running with a lead story spoiling the character’s death and circumstances in their headlines: after Captain America and The Sentry, it appears that Marvel comics just can’t keep their big death-blows under wraps, whether it’s intentional or not.

Should you feel the need to know exactly what happens, you can pick up Fantastic Four #587 in stores now (or check any news feeds that you haven’t seen since Tuesday.)

We came to the realisation a while ago that a lot happens that BurnAllZombies gets a lot of news. We also realised that not a lot of that news is worthy of getting a post all of its own. So we carried out a readers’ survey, and it turns out you agreed with us: most of you don’t necessarily care about multiple posts with trailers or images when there isn’t some more meat to add to it. (And if you don’t agree with that, well, you should have taken part in our readers’ survey, shouldn’t you?)

So instead, we’re launching the ZombieZine, a weekly round-up of news from the worlds of gaming, movies, comics and other such nerdy and geeky finery. We’ll have images, trailers, release dates, and other such news, made up of all those little pieces of news that maybe don’t warrant an entry just for their own sakes. We’ll aim to have the ZombieZine going out every week, and to make your life interesting, will have a quick run-down of the new releases (in Ireland) for the week (and if we have reviews, we’ll link to them.)

Roll up, roll up…you can check the first ZombieZine below.

Andrew Garfield Is Spider-Man (Now There’s A Picture To Prove It)

The first images of Andrew Garfield as Spider-Man from the as-yet untitled Spider-Man reboot coming in 2012 (in 3D no less…yeah, I’m not sure how I feel about that either.) Garfield himself manages to look like a suitably lanky teenager (no small feat for a 27 year-old), an interesting contrast to Tobey Maguire’s somewhat stockier frame (Spider-Man being lanky/teenager-like is good!) As a promo image, though, there’s a few questions: what’s with the damaged Spider-Man symbol on his chest? (Is this taken from some post-fight sequence?) Where’s the mask? (You can’t expect us to have a serious opinion without seeing the full thing yet?) And what’s with those metal bits on his wrists? (Old-school mechanical web-shooters? Or just a fancy MP3 player?)

We’re sure we’ll see a more complete set of images soon, but for those of us who’ve been unsure if a Spider-Man reboot is maybe too soon, it bodes well for the movie that there can be so much right about the image above.

The Dark Knight Returns Gets Some Cast: Tom Hardy Is Bane; Anne Hathaway Is Selina Kyle (Not Catwoman)

In a press release from 19th January, Christopher Nolan finally offered up some information on The Dark Knight Returns, and there were some surprises. Both Anne Hathaway and Tom Hardy had been linked to roles in the third (and potentially final) of Nolan’s Batman films, but it’s the characters they’ll be playing that have are most interesting.

Hardy (who worked with Nolan on last year’s Inception) will be playing Bane, the villain best known for “breaking the Bat,” and worst-known for featuring in Joel Schumacher’s 1997 Batman And Robin (wherein the phrase “hulking mess” comes to mind.)

“I am delighted to be working with Tom again and excited to watch him bring to life our new interpretation of one of Batman’s most formidable enemies.”

Hathaway’s casting has some similar issues, but also some interesting phrasing from Nolan: she’ll be playing Selina Kyle, but there’s no indication from Nolan’s statement that the film will also feature Kyle’s alter-ego, Catwoman. That character’s big-screen interpretations have always been camp (and let’s all look at Halle Berry when we say “unsuccessful”) which might not fit with Nolan’s style from the first two movies, but it could also mark a significant change in tone as Nolan brings his trilogy to a close.

X-Men: First Class Gets Some Class Photos

Last week, we didn’t even have so much as an official poster image for X-Men: First Class (sorry if that made our 20 for 11 a bit boring) and now, we have the poster above. And some cast photos. It doesn’t say much for what’s actually going to happen in the film, as most of the images are fairly dry and action-less, but hey, there’s chess games! And Magneto! More images and some news from director Matthew Vaughn can be found over at /FILM.

Trailers: Rubber

French horror films are usually good, but what about when they’re about killer tyres? With psychic powers?

Rubber comes from French director Quentin Dupieux, or Mr. Oizo. That’s the musician responsible for the music in the Flat Eric Levi’s ads, in case you can’t remember…yeah, we’re not sure what that says about a feature film either, so just sit back, relax and watch the trailer.

Nintendo 3DS Gets A Date, Games

We knew it would be March: now we know exactly when. Nintendo’s new handheld console, the Nintendo 3DS will be in stores March 25th in Europe and March 27th in the US. Among other games that were announced for the “launch window” (between March and June) will be a remastered Legend Of Zelda: Ocarina Of Time, Street Fighter IV: 3D Edition, Kid Icarus: Uprising, Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell, Rayman 3D and Rabbids 3D. There’s no solid info on retail price yet: Nintendo have released this to retailers, and currently we’re hearing everywhere between €200 and €300 based on different retailers and bundles.

Your Mom Hates This

Dead Space 2 isn’t in stores until next week, but the promotional campaign has already begun, with some TV spots and a website declaring that “Your Mom Hates This.” It all seems a little bit like the campaign is trying to flaunt controversy and anyone who’s thought seriously about games will probably groan at a company actively using this to sell its product.

But that said, it’s still a fun viral. And is a nice comparison to the launch trailer which features some little-known band called Smashing Pumpkins that nobody’s ever heard of.

The first instalment in our 20 for 11 features ten of the films we’re looking out for this year: we’ve superheroes galore, wizards, aliens, time travel and alternative worlds. Y’know, all the things you expect from your year’s big movies. And some of them even cover more than just one of those categories.

Films below are in no particular order, but we’ve tried to keep them as close to order of release as possible.

Battle: Los Angeles

We’re still not sure exactly what name will end up attached to this when it hits cinemas, with IMDB telling us that the film will have the international title of World Invasion: Battle LA. Either way, we’re looking at an impressive low-budget alien invasion film that will be ticking our boxes in similar ways to District 9.

Aaron Eckhart takes the lead, heading up a squadron of soldiers dealing with an alien invasion in modern LA (just in case you couldn’t guess from the name.) Soldiers and civilians alike end up falling foul to the alien attacks, with a cast rounded out to include Bridget Moynihan and singer Ne-Yo.

And whatever you do, don’t mention the similarities to 2010′s Skyline: the legal action is still pending on that one…

Sucker Punch

Zack Snyder’s movies certainly have a unique visual style, but up until now, he’s been working with adapting other peoples’ material. Now, Sucker Punch gives us an original story from the director himself (who also co-wrote the screenplay) and…well, this isn’t going to be one of those easily described movies.

Snyder himself has described Sucker Punch as “Alice in Wonderland with machine guns”…the dragons, robots and giant samurai mechs are curiously absent from that description. Emily Browning (probably best known as one of the precocious kids from Lemony Snicket’s A Series Of Unfortunate Events) plays a young girl clinging to her sanity after being sent to an asylum in the early 20th century. Cue plans for escape, requiring Browning and her fellow inmates to fight their way to freedom through an imaginary steampunk world.

Snyder’s already proven himself with 300 and Watchmen, but maybe hasn’t made that step from “indie” to “big time” just yet. Still, Sucker Punch will certainly prove an interesting test for Snyder’s next project: a film about a Man Of Steel from the planet Krypton,

[There is a video that cannot be displayed in this feed. Visit the blog entry to see the video.]

Source Code

2009 may have been a few years off a space odyssey, but it still gave us Duncan Jones’ directorial debut, the fantastically claustrophobic but amazingly deep and philosophical Moon. (Yeah, I liked it, in case you can’t guess.) Jones follows up this year with Source Code, a movie that takes the science fiction elements back to some very realistic Earth-based roots.

Jake Gyllenhaal plays Captain Colter Stevens, a soldier investigating the bombing of a passenger train in an attempt to prevent a second terrorist attack. But this is no simple investigation: Stevens is placed into the “source code” of the title, a device that allows him to experience the last eight minutes prior to the train’s explosion by assuming the identity of one of the victims. Colter relives the attack over and over, each time learning more about not just the disaster, but also the train’s passengers, even becoming convinced that he might be able to change the train’s fate. Whether he can, or not, remains to be seen.

On paper, it sounds like Philip K Dick was let loose on the script for Groundhog Day: somewhat surprisingly, it’s an original script, but Dick-fans can still get their 2011 fill with The Adjustment Bureau. After Moon, we’ve high expectations of Jones and Source Code: with any luck, Source Code will provide a totally brain-melting plot (in the good way) and vastly exceed those expectations.

[There is a video that cannot be displayed in this feed. Visit the blog entry to see the video.]

Scream 4

Don’t worry: I’m not under any delusions that Scream 4 will be a great film but…I’m looking forward to it. Wes Craven’s original Scream films were something of a guilty pleasure on their original release: admittedly, they’ve dated, and probably don’t stand up as well as the original movies that they lovingly referenced. But…they were still fun!

With Scream 4, director Craven reunites with screenwriter Kevin Williamson (Dawson’s Creek) and returns to Woodsboro 10 years after the original trilogy closed: while Neve Campbell, David Arquette and Courteney Cox return as Sidney, Dewey and Gale, but this time, the focus will be moving onto a younger generation of heroes (and victims), namely Sidney’s cousin Jill (Emma Roberts.) Like the original trilogy, the cast of Scream 4 is an impressive mix of names and talent (heck, there’s even some crossover between the two): Rory Culkin, Hayden Panettiere, Community‘s Alison Brie, Adam Brody, Mary McDonnell, Anna Paquin and Kristen Bell all get some screentime, and we can safely say at least some of those names will end up dead by the movies’ end.

We all know what to expect from any Scream film, but there’s still hope that the fourth film in the franchise could have a few tricks up its sleeve and not be another in the long list of desperate remakes/reboots.

[There is a video that cannot be displayed in this feed. Visit the blog entry to see the video.]

Thor

Once May arrives, 2011 turns into a year of novel and comic-book adaptations and the first to land in cinemas has a red-cape and a massive hammer. Nope, it’s not Superman working on a construction site, it’s Marvel’s god of thunder, Thor.

It’s an unusual mix of characters and settings for a summer blockbuster: Marvel may own the superhero Thor, one of the main figures in their Avengers franchise, but there’s also an honest-to-goodness Norse God of Thunder with his own story and mythology. Marvel’s comics have embraced both elements of the character, and the film looks set to do the same, with director Kenneth Branagh bringing some pomp and circumstance to Thor’s godhood and the divine affairs of his home in Asgard.

Chris Hemsworth takes on the title role (his biggest role to date has been that of James T Kirk’s short-lived father in the Star Trek reboot) as the thunder-god is banished to Earth by his proud father Odin (Anthony Hopkins.) Stripped of his powers (and his hammer, that you might have seen at the end of Iron Man 2) Thor has to learn how to become a very human hero to defend Earth from an Asgardian threat.

Building off the back of Iron Man 2, Thor will continue to shape Marvel’s universe on the big screen (more to come below) building towards 2012 Avengers crossover. But with Branagh at the helm, it looks like Thor could blow everything else out of the water, and open up audiences to a totally different type of superhero movie.

[There is a video that cannot be displayed in this feed. Visit the blog entry to see the video.]

X-Men: First Class

Keeping with Marvel superheroes comes a different sort of movie. The X-Men have always felt somewhat apart from the main Marvel Universe within the comics, and with Fox owning the rights to the mutants, that looks set to continue on the big screen. The franchise hasn’t really done much since X-Men 2, with the third movie and X-Men Origins: Wolverine receiving less than stellar reviews. With that in mind, there’s not much pressure on the shoulders of another prequel, but there’s also a small chance that things could go well.

Matthew Vaughn (Stardust, Kick-Ass) takes the director’s reins in a prequel going to the heart of the original friendship between Professor Charles Xavier (James McAvoy) and Magneto (Michael Fassbender.) (Since the film is set in the 1960′s, we’ll hold off on the nerd-rage of Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen not reprising their roles…we don’t want to see more horrible de-aging CGI.) Other information on the film is thin on the ground, and we haven’t even got a trailer yet, but casting seems to indicate that X-Men: First Class will have more mutants than you can shake a stick at, including appearances from fan-favourites like Mystique, Emma Frost and the Hellfire Club (and then there’s the WTF moment of including Nightcrawler’s barely acknowledged father Azazel…)

We’re saying no more until closer to release…

Image from the unrelated X-Men: First Class comic

Green Lantern

From two (relatively) established comic-book universes to the great untapped cosmic world of DC, Green Lantern aims to do for DC’s superheroes what Iron Man did for Marvel’s. It’s also one of those movies that we can honestly say could go either way. But for now, the movie’s at least in good hands.

Director Martin Campbell has overseen two reinventions of the James Bond franchise (GoldenEye and Casino Royale) so this could prove another success story for him. Ryan Reynolds stars as Hal Jordan, the first human ever selected (perhaps accidentally) to join the Green Lantern Corps, an intergalactic…well, police force. Just they wear green instead of blue. And have rings instead of guns. And superpowers instead of doughnuts. There’s a lot to fit in, and the Green Lantern Corps is particularly awkward to transition to the big screen: non-humanoid aliens with green-hued power rings look “strange” enough in the comic books, let alone in 3D.

Green Lantern looks like it might be more about set-up than paying off, with villains Sinestro, Parallax and Hector Hammond all appearing in the film (while Carol Ferris, played by Blake Lively, is also to sometimes-a-villain Star Sapphire.) Work is even already underway on the script for a sequel, which may (or may not be) somewhat premature.

There may be six weeks between the release dates for Thor and Green Lantern, but we can definitely say now that the two films are going to draw comparisons. Whether that affects one film, or the other, remains to be seen.

[There is a video that cannot be displayed in this feed. Visit the blog entry to see the video.]

Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows, Part Two

You either love all things Harry Potter, or you hate them, but you can’t deny the phenomenon that the series has been. And ultimately, all eyes are going to be on this film, whether you want to see how it ends, whether you can’t wait for it to end, or whether you’ll be crying and acting like it never happened.

Somewhat unfairly splitting the last book into two films, the final film promises epic battles, deaths galore, more death, a few more characters dying and…did we mention death? It’s going to be a pretty harsh ride, and you know what? Even if you can’t stand the series, you’re probably going to look forward to all that death.

[There is a video that cannot be displayed in this feed. Visit the blog entry to see the video.]

Captain America: The First Avenger

It’s back to the Marvel Universe for the second time in 2011 with Captain America: The First Avenger the origin story of…well, Captain America. He was the first Avenger, don’t you know?

Joe Johnston (The Wolfman) directs and while it’s not a prequel, don’t expect too much modern hi-jinks: Captain America’s origins are heavily tied in with World War II, so for this movie, we’re looking at a period piece. In fact, Captain America himself doesn’t appear in the “modern” comic-book era until issue #4 of The Avengers, so there’s a wealth of stories to be told before he interacts with Thor, Iron Man and the other established universe: of course, they’re likely to get compressed so Captain America can feature heavily in 2012′s The Avengers.

Having served his time as the Human Torch in the two Fantastic Four movies, it’s now Chris Evans’ time to lead as he steps into the shoes of the Nazi-battling super-soldier Steve Rogers. Those Nazis have an interesting overlap with the terrorist HYDRA organisation from Marvel Comics, and also a very sinister lead in the form of the Red Skull (Hugo Weaving.) Set in the 1940s, Captain America is another one of those unusual comic-book movies that could go either way: by taking the traditional movie superhero out of his or her comfort zone, we could end up with something very unusual indeed. But chances are, with the line-up of movies coming in 2011, one of the other films above will have already gotten us used to that.

Chris Evans in costume as Captain America

The Adventures Of Tintin: Secret Of The Unicorn

Steven Spielberg’s been working on a Tintin film longer than some of us have been alive (apparently, he acquired the movie rights in 1983) but it looks like the film might finally get a release late this year, so we’re including it as part of our 20 for 11, though we live in fear of it being pushed back to 2012.

It’s clear from the time involved that this is a labour of love for Spielberg, but perhaps more interesting are some of the other big names behind the scenes: director Spielberg is joined as producer by Peter Jackson, with Edgar Wright (Spaced, Scott Pilgrim), Joe Cornish (Adam & Joe) and Steven Moffatt (Sherlock, Doctor Who) writing. While the film itself will be motion-captured, some of the actors will still be recognisable underneath all those digital digits: Jamie Bell as Tintin joined by Andy Serkis, Simon Pegg, Nick Frost, Daniel Craig and Toby Jones.

It looks like Tintin could easily prove Spielberg’s biggest hit this century if it goes well. Again, we’re waiting for a trailer or some meaty images from the movie.

Of course, there’s a lot more than just 10 movies coming out in 2011, so we’re not forgetting there are some other big releases as well. So for all those who want to complain about movies we left off the list, here’s some honourable mentions…and some that we don’t care about at all, but some fanboy will give out if we don’t mention: The Green Hornet / Black Swan / I Am Number Four / Priest / Pirates Of The Caribbean: On Stranger Tides / The Tree Of Life / Super 8/ Rise Of The Apes / Cars 2 / Transformers: Dark Of The Moon / Cowboys & Aliens / Piranha 3DD / The Thing / Immortals / The Muppets

Stuck-in-a-lift horror flick Devil (or elevator…depends which side of the Atlantic you’re on) descends into cinemas September 17th, so here’s a clip to elevate your expectations about the film, with some footage and clips of the team behind the film discussing it (and also, as many lift puns as we can think of cramming in.)

Devil has itself an interesting team: with a story by M. Night Shyamalan (the less said about that may be the better after some recent flops), the rest of the production is rounded out by Brian Nelson (one of the writers of 30 Days Of Night and Hard Candy) and is directed by brothers Drew and John Erick Dowdle (previously involved in the US-remake of Rec, Quarantine and the unsettling serial-killer movie The Poughkeepsie Tapes.) And yes, that is also Ryan’s brother from The OC.

Click the button below to check the footage (just make sure you don’t need to go up any tall buildings any time soon…or are at least comfortable using the stairs.) And add your own lift-related puns below, ’cause I’ve given up trying up.

http://bubble-cast.com

Close

The latest Resident Evil movie (Resident Evil: Afterlife) hits cinemas this Friday. In 3D no less!

With a website called BurnAllZombies, we’d be remiss not to share this exclusive clip from the film, which also includes one of those weird moments where the games cross over with the movies, namely the axe-wielding enemy from Resident Evil 5. This time, he’s facing off against Claire Redfield (Heroes‘ Ali Larter) in a men’s toilet…nope, we’re not sure either, but it looks pretty cool.

Even in this clip, you can see how the film will be making use of some 3D effects, and like everything Resident Evil, it looks just a little bit silly, but totally awesome.

When it comes to movies named The Hole, I’m sure a lot of readers think of that English horror/thriller movie which Thora Birch and Keira Knightley.

But this is something different: The Hole 3D comes from director Joe Dante and has been floating around since 2009, finally making its way into cinemas this year. Dante is known for something we can only describe as family-friendly-chillers, with both Gremlins movies, Innerspace, The Howling and Small Soldiers under his belt (not to mention Eerie, Indiana) so it should come as no surprise that The Hole 3D has scary stuff, kids, kids getting scared, and kids being scary.

Check the trailer below: for a film released in 2010, it’s one of the most 80s trailers I’ve seen in years (mostly because of the voice over) but it also looks like we might finally be able to scare and entertain our kids (well…nephews, nieces and cousins) in the same way as we were way back in the 80s.

After generating some good word of mouth at this year’s Comic Con, a trailer for Skyline has been officially released today. Set for release later this year and directed by the Strause Brothers, the film follows a group of people attempting to survive an alien invasion in which people are sucked up into the sky.

Despite having a small budget, the trailer below (via Trailer Addict and Apple) packs quite the punch with some really impressive effects and interesting shots. Between this, Monsters and Battle: Los Angeles, it looks like alien invasion movies are back with a bang.

Now that those infidels have left us, here’s the thing:

Universal Pictures Ireland are running a Facebook competition? And in case you couldn’t tell what the prize is, it’s tickets to the Irish premiere of Scott Pilgrim vs The World, which will be held in Dublin next Monday, 16th August. Also, the cast and director will be there, just in case seeing the movie wasn’t enough for you.

You can enter the competition for tickets to the film that stars Michael Cera (ahem) here

Oh, and while you’re on Facebook, “like” the Hell out of BurnAllZombies here

Scott Pilgrim vs The World is due for release August 20th in the States and August 25th in the UK and Ireland.
